Reducing child mortality is a key priority under the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The global target aims to reduce under-five mortality to 25 per 1,000 live births by 2030 and neonatal mortality to 12 per 1,000 live births. India, under the National Health Policy (2017) and India Newborn Action Plan, has set progressive milestones to achieve these targets.

Current Scenario in Bihar

Bihar has made significant progress in improving child health indicators:

  • Neonatal Mortality Rate (NMR) reduced from 28 (2017) to 25 per 1,000 live births (2018)
  • Under-5 Mortality Rate reduced from 41 to 37 per 1,000 live births
  • This decline is higher compared to the national average reduction

These improvements reflect ongoing efforts in strengthening healthcare services across the state.

Major Causes of Child Mortality

Nearly 90% of child deaths are caused by five major conditions:

  • Neonatal Causes (birth-related complications)
  • Pneumonia
  • Diarrhoea
  • Malaria
  • Measles

Addressing these conditions is crucial for achieving SDG targets.

Key Interventions

To further reduce child mortality, the following strategies are essential:

  • Strengthening newborn care services (SNCU, NBCC)
  • Promoting institutional deliveries
  • Immunization programs (Routine & Special drives)
  • Early diagnosis and treatment of pneumonia and diarrhoea
  • Community awareness and ASHA worker engagement

Way Forward

Bihar aims to accelerate progress by:

  • Enhancing healthcare infrastructure
  • Improving maternal and child health services
  • Ensuring universal access to quality healthcare
  • Strengthening monitoring systems

With sustained efforts, Bihar is on track to achieve SDG targets and ensure a healthier future for children.
